Google has confirmed that Core Web Vitals will become official ranking signals for Google Search in May 2021, with a new update designed to measure how website users experience the speed and responsiveness of a webpage.

The search engine giant makes hundreds of tweaks and changes to its algorithm every year to improve user experience for people browsing the web. As Google adapts to better serve its users, SEO specialists and businesses like yours will also need to adapt their SEO techniques and work around the algorithm to continue to rank highly in the search results.

What are Google Core Web Vitals?

Google’s Core Web Vitals are just another one of Google’s algorithm tweaks, and they are essentially real-world experience metrics that the search engine looks at to measure things like:

  • Page Load Speed – An ideal page load speed according to Google is 2.5 seconds or less
  • Interactivity – Your website should take less than 100 ms to become interactive
  • Page Stability – Your website’s content shouldn’t unexpectedly shift around when the page is loading

This update isn’t so much about the actual text content on the page (although your website should always have SEO-rich content to rank well), but more about how easy your site is for your potential customers to use. If your website is slower and less responsive than your competitor’s website, theirs may rank in a higher position than yours on Google, meaning customers are more likely to click onto their website and purchase from them.

With Google providing such a large notice for this May 2021 update, we expect this to have a big impact on SEO rankings – making it more important than ever to have an SEO agency to take care of your rankings for you.
